(29 Nov 1995) Greek/Nat The health of Greek Premier Andreas Papandreou has taken a turn for the worse. Papandreou, who is 76, was in hospital Wednesday on a respirator following signs of kidney failure. Andreas Papandreou, a Harvard-trained economist who dominated Greek politics in the 1980s, rose to power as a fiery Socialist. Andreas Papandreou was born into politics. His father, Georgios Papandreou, served as prime minister off and on during the 1940s, 50s and 60s. Born on February 5th, 1919, on the Greek island Khios, Papandreou first became a minister under his centrist father in 1963. For two decades prior to his political career, he lived in the United States. There he studied economics, became a professor and married Margaret Chant of Elmhurst, Illinois in 1951. They had four children, one girl and three boys, including Education Minister George Papandreou. Despite his American ties, he renounced his U-S citizenship after America supported the ruling 1967-1974 military junta, and failed to prevent Turkey's 1974 invasion of Cyprus. When the Greek military seized power and suspended democracy, Papandreou was jailed. He was released after eight months and left for America. In 1974, he returned to enjoy huge popularity. Seven years later, he was elected Prime Minister. He worked hard to improve relations with the Greek's ancient enemy Turkey. SOUNDBITE (Greek): "From now on we'll follow a policy of peace. Nothing can be achieved by war, a war that could cause not only the death of both countries but affect the wider Europe also. Turkish Prime Minister Turkut Ozal and I, both keep the same position and do our best to make it real." SUPER CAPTION: Andreas Papandreou, Prime Minister of Greece During these years his health began to fail. In 1988, he underwent open heart surgery in London. At his side, a young blonde named Dmitra (Mimi) Liani. The former Olympic Airways stewardess had become his mistress. He survived a messy divorce from his wife of 38 years, Margaret, thanks to his political charisma and loyalty from Greek voters. By 1989, Papandreou married Mimi. She swiftly adapted to political life and many say she influenced her husband. Criticism mounted however, and he was blamed for squandering funds and leaving a legacy of debt. Papandreou lost his parliamentary majority in the June 1989 elections. Later that year, he was indicted along with several ministers for allegedly authorising wiretaps and complicity in embezzling 210 (m) million dollars. Despite his failing health, he held the Socialists together and led the party back to power in 1993. His final term had been marked with efforts to bring Greece's economy in line with the rest of its European Union partners. While he made fewer and fewer public appearances, his wife Mimi gained more of the limelight. Critics charged that the 40-year-old, who had been made Chief of Staff, was manipulating the prime minister. They claimed she was forging ahead with political goals of her own. Newspapers published nude and compromising photographs of Mimi, hoping to drive her out of her husband's office. But Andreas Papandreou stood by his wife, saying he would support Dmitra in whatever she chose to do. (4 Dec 1995) Greek/English/Nat As veteran Greek Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou fights for his life in hospital, Greeks are contemplating the political void he will leave behind if he dies. Greece has ground to a standstill, with the nation keeping vigil as 76-year old Papandreou remains in hospital hooked up to a respirator and kidney machine. Ever since Andreas Papandreou was admitted to the Onassis Heart Centre in Athens on November 20th well-wishers have held a vigil outside. Some hold up signs expressing their hope that the Greek Prime Minister will recover. This woman holds a picture of the Harvard-educated Prime Minister who has dominated Greek politics for twenty years. Papandreou is being fed through a tube and is on a kidney machine and a respirator. He is reported to be under heavy sedation. Doctors say his condition is stable. SOUNDBITE: (Greek) "The situation of the prime minister's health in the last 24 hours has remained stable. He had dialysis which he tolerated well and his breathing is being supported by a respirator." SUPER CAPTION: Grigoris Skalkeas, Hospital Spokesman There's some optimism about his recovery. SOUNDBITE: (English) "Yes in some ways improving...yes I am a little more optimistic." SUPER CAPTION: Grigoris Skalkeas, Hospital Spokesman Papandreou's passing would leave a giant hole at the top, as he doesn't seem to have arranged for his succession. His Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK) is split between "populists" who support free-spending policies and "modernisers" who back Greece's commitment to the budgetary discipline required for European economic and monetary union (EMU). A leader chosen from either of these factions would be vulnerable to sniping from the other. One alternative would be to elect a compromise candidate to see the party through to the next general election, due in 1997. His supporters clustered at the hospital hope against hope that he will recover. SOUNDBITE: (Greek) "God help him and keep him alive. He's the only one who can save Greece." SUPER CAPTION: Supporter SOUNDBITE: (Greek) "We came here to join our hopes for Andreas to recover soon and take over the ship (Greece) that's going down. We hope to see Andreas Strong again because he is Greece's hope and future. Without him our country will die." SUPER CAPTION: Supporter Sir Magdi Yacoub, the Egyptian-born British doctor who performed triple-bypass surgery on Papandreou in 1988, flew to Greece on the Prime Minister's plane. He was cheered as he entered the hospital. Yacoub has since returned to Britain and says the Prime Minister's heart is functioning normally he said he's prepared to return if he's needed. Meanwhile, Greeks are praying for their leader and ..waiting. Find out more about AP Archive: 🤍 Twitter: 🤍 Facebook: 🤍 Instagram: 🤍 You can license this story through AP Archive: 🤍

The Making of a Greek Democrat and Political Maverick

Greece in the 1960s produced one of Europe's arguably most controversial post-WWII politicians. Andreas Papandreou's maverick politics grew out of his conflict laden re-engagement with Greece in the 1960s. Returning to Athens after 20 years in the US where he had been a rising member of the American liberal establishment, Papandreou forged a social reform-oriented, nationalist politics in Greece that ultimately put him at odds with the US foreign policy establishment and made him the primary target of a pro-American military coup in 1967. Venerated by his admirers and despised by his detractors with equal passion, the Harvard-educated Papandreou left in his wake no clear-cut answer to the question of who he was and what he stood for. In this biography of Andreas Papandreou, the author Stan Draenos chronicles the events, struggles and ideas that defined the man's dramatic, intrigue-filled transformation from Kennedy-era modernizer to Cold War maverick. In the process the book examines the explosive interplay of character and circumstance that generated Papandreou's contentious, but powerfully consequential politics.

(23 Jun 1996) Natural Sound Thousands of Greeks have flocked to the capital's main orthodox Cathedral to pay their last respects to former socialist Premier Andreas Papandreou. His body will remain lying in state until his funeral on Wednesday. Papandreou had died early Sunday, aged 77. Thousands of Greeks flocked to Athens' main Orthodox Cathedral to pay homage to their one-time leader, socialist Andreas Papandreau. He died early Sunday, aged 77. Within hours of Papandreou's death, his body was moved to the Cathedral, where it will lie in state until his funeral on Wednesday. His present wife, and now widow, Dimitra, was struggling to contain her grief as she stood near her husband's coffin. Dimitra, together with close associates, found it difficult getting through the crowds that packed the exit of the Cathedral. Later to arrive was the late Premier's son, George, who's also the minister of education. Andreas Papandreou's death came as a shock to the Greeks despite his years of bed health, especially heart problems. He had fought for democracy during the dictatorship of 1967-74, and led the country through a decade of great change in the 1980s. Not everyone agreed with him, but Papandreou's death was still a shock to Greece. "The End," said one newspaper headline. On October 19th, 2020, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Centre for Hellenic Studies was pleased to present Dr. Harris Mylonas, associate professor of political science and international affairs at George Washington University’s Elliott School of International Affairs, for the fourth annual Edward and Emily McWhinney memorial lecture. Abstract Why did Greece experience such a strong blow to its party system relative to other eurozone countries that also signed loan agreements and implemented stringent austerity measures? The consensus appears to be that the patronage contract (i.e. the party-dominated patron-client networks that reproduced the political and economic system which had existed since the country’s independence but was bureaucratized during the post-junta period) gradually deteriorated after 2010 as a result of stipulations in the MoUs signed with the country's creditors. While this explanation can help us account for much of the variation, I argue that in order to account for the severity of the political transformation in Greece, relative to other crisis-stricken countries of the eurozone, we need to consider the legacy of two charismatic leaders Constantine Karamanlis (1907-98) and Andreas Papandreou (1919-96). Speaker bio Harris Mylonas is associate professor of political science and international affairs at George Washington University’s Elliott School of International Affairs. He is the editor-in-chief of Nationalities Papers published by Cambridge University Press for the Association for the Study of Nationalities. After completing his PhD in political science at Yale University in 2008, Mylonas was an Academy Scholar at the Harvard Academy for International and Area Studies at Harvard University (2008-09 & 2011-12). He recently served as associate dean for research at the Elliott School of International Affairs (2017-18). He is the chair of the Council for European Studies’ Historical Study of States and Regimes Research Network since 2019. Mylonas’ work contributes to our understanding of states’ management of diversity that may originate from national minorities, immigrants, diasporas, or refugees. He is particularly interested in the role of decision makers’ perceptions about foreign involvement in their domestic affairs and the impact these perceptions have on the planning and implementation of state policies. He is the author of The Politics of Nation-Building: Making Co-Nationals, Refugees, and Minorities (Cambridge University Press, 2013), for which he won the 2014 European Studies Book Award by the Council for European Studies, as well as The Peter Katzenstein Book Prize in 2013. Mylonas’ work has also been published in Perspectives on Politics, Comparative Political Studies, Security Studies, European Journal of Political Research, Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies, Nations and Nationalism, Social Science Quarterly, Nationalities Papers, Ethnopolitics, and various edited volumes. He is currently working on his next book tentatively titled Diaspora Management Logics where he analyzes various governmental decisions vis-à-vis different diaspora segments. The recent political and financial crisis in Europe, with Greece at its epicenter, occupied much of his attention in the past ten years. He published a series of op-eds in the Los Angeles Times, Washington Post, Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy.com, CNN.com, the Guardian, Newsweek Japan, among others as well as more analytical pieces, academic articles, and chapters in edited volumes. Since 2010, he writes the annual report on developments in Greece for the European Journal of Political Research; since 2018, he contributes to the Freedom House reports on Greece and Cyprus. His documentary film Searching for Andreas: Political Leadership in Times of Crisis, which also deals with the deep causes of the recent financial and political crisis in Greece, premiered at the 2018 Thessaloniki Documentary Festival and won two awards at the 2019 International Documentary Festival of Ierapetra. Edward and Emily McWhinney Edward and Emily McWhinney Memorial Lecture was established in 2017 to honour the memory of two long-time friends and supporters of Hellenic Studies at Simon Fraser University and is devoted to contemporary issues in international relations. Both Edward and Emily were committed to academic excellence and public service and this now annual lecture is a lasting legacy for the couple at SFU. It is organized by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Centre for Hellenic Studies to support public discussion of the topics that animated the McWhinneys’ professional and intellectual lives. Professor Emeritus Edward Mcwhinney, QC passed away in 2015 on his ninety-first birthday, following a short illness. He was predeceased by his wife Emily McWhinney, who passed away in 2011.
